The NFL season kicked off on September 8th, 2023, and fans across the country celebrated the return of their favorite teams. But it wasn’t just the fans who were excited – sportsbooks were too.
According to GeoComply, there was a 56% increase in geolocation transactions during Week 1 of the NFL season compared to the same time period in 2022. This means that more people than ever before were placing bets on football games, and it’s not just the number of bets that’s increasing – the size of the bets is too. GeoComply also reported that the average bet size increased by 20% in Week 1 compared to last year.
This surge in betting activity is being driven by a number of factors, including the legalization of sports betting in more and more states. It was the first “Week 1”of three new states – Maryland, Massachusetts, and Ohio – all launched legal sports betting during the last season And these new states were quick to get involved in the action. For example, Ohio saw nearly 20 million geolocation checks during Week 1, making it one of the most active states in the country. And Massachusetts added nearly 60,000 new sports wagering accounts in just its first week of operation.
NFL sports betting is more popular than ever before, with over 1 million new player accounts created across US sportsbooks in Week 1, a 40% increase from last year. When the Lions scored the first touchdown of the season, GeoComply saw a massive spike in traffic, with 4,200 transactions per second immediately following the score. This is the company’s highest rate of volume ever for a week one NFL game. Additionally, new states Maryland, Massachusetts, and Ohio all saw significant betting activity in their first week of legal operation.
This suggests that the legalization of sports betting in new states is having a positive impact on the industry as a whole. As more states legalize sports betting and more people become fans of the sport, we can expect to see even more betting activity in the future.
The excitement of the new season is also playing a role in the increased betting activity. The NFL is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world, and fans are eager to bet on their favorite teams. And with so many teams vying for a spot in the playoffs, there’s no shortage of suspense and excitement. This is sure to keep bettors engaged throughout the season.
